Wow – What a Year!
Well, there we have it – another 365 days have passed. 52 weeks, 12 months. However you measure it, it’s gone quick!
I always remember being told when I was younger that time speeds up the older you get. “Nonsense” I thought. Hmmm, I’m beginning to think it’s true.
So how was 2009 for you? Mine was a mixed bag to say the least. There were plenty of personal development lessons I have identified over this year – which is fine as it gives me something to work on.
From a business point of view I don’t have many regrets apart from one thing which has annoyed me and that is I should have started this blog sooner! (One saving grace is I have learned a lot during this time)
I launched HelpfulGuy in September, and have been very pleased with the results already! I have managed to attract a great audience and following and I really enjoy bringing you all the content I can and sharing my knowledge. So thank you for reading!
So why the delay? Well, I hang around with other SEO guys and girls – I read a lot and learn a lot from the best in the industry. That was the problem. Not that I am learning from the best and hanging around fellow SEOers – but the fact that it made me feel that I cannot possibly contribute any more and I felt that everyone knows this stuff. Wrong!
The same thing happened with Social Media – I have been practising Social Media since mid 2008 and the same thing happened – I thought everyone knew this stuff because of the (online) circles I was hanging around in. Wrong again!
There are literally millions of people out there that don’t know this stuff – I just failed to recognise that.
Learn From My Mistakes
So – a little tip from me. Whatever your passion, whatever circles you hang around in – there is always an abundance of people that don’t know what you know and more importantly – want to know it!
So – with that in mind, keep going with your passion – this ultimately will give you the most mileage. After all, you know this stuff, you love this stuff and can more than likely teach this stuff so stick with it.
Don’t be attracted to the next “big thing” or “craze” – if you’re not into it, it won’t go far.
So, for 2010 – there is plenty that I have in mind for me and you. More training, more webinars, reports, videos, audios, interviews – the lot. I’m going all out. I have come a fair way since September, so imagine a whole year of me “on it”.
But that’s enough of me. I’d love to hear your story of 2009 – what did you go through (doesn’t have to be business) – what do you plan on achieving in 2010? What would you like to see from me? I’m happy to hear!
Please leave in the comments below – I would love to see them. Remember this doesn’t have to be just business based. It could be personal. I wanna know what makes you guys tick

Oh, and of course – HAPPY NEW YEAR! May it be a great one for you.

John this is such an awesome post! You just touched on so many things I've felt this year, in particular with Social Media. It's so true that as you learn, you start mixing in circles with some amazing people and can end up feeling as though there is nothing left to teach. This is soooo wrong! Here is a great example… Just today I was talking to someone in a management role about how people could more easily learn things in his particular industry by offering click by click training through Webinars. He said a what? I said a Webinar lol. He then asked me to spell the word!
So there you have it. Never think that you have nothing to offer and everyone already knows what you do
Happy New Decade!
Thanks Michaele!
Glad it touched on something for you – it's something I feel a lot of people will experience.
It's funny how we take terms for granted, like webinars etc. I think its a great method for business of all sizes to present and train people. I also thought the term/technique was common knowledge. Maybe not!
Hope you have a fantastic new year!
